New Berlin Taxpayers Alliance Endorses Joseph O’Brien for Waukesha County Supervisor

There are many issues that will likely face the Waukesha County Board in the next term. Among those issues are a county wide sales tax as well as public safety policy with regard to the Sheriff’s Department.

These are key issues a Democrat supported candidate will not share the same values and decisions as the majority of voters in Waukesha County or New Berlin. New Berlin needs strong independent conservative representation on the County Board. In this election that candidate is Joseph O’Brien and The New Berlin Taxpayers Alliance is please to offer our endorsement.

Joe’s opponent, Joel Gaughan is supported by the Waukesha County Democrats. https://www.waukeshadems.org/vote

On issues of public safety and taxes, Democrats have not been on the side of taxpayers or citizens of Waukesha County and New Berlin. A county wide sales tax was proposed in 2025 and will likely surface again this next term. We need a true fiscal conservative on the county board who work to reduce spending increases so a county sales tax or property tax increase is not needed.

We also need a County Supervisor who will stand on the side of law and order. This includes making sure the Sheriff’s department is allowed to focus on its core mission AND cooperate with Federal Law Enforcement partners when it comes to illegal immigration enforcement.

For these reasons and others, NBTA is endorsing Joseph O’Brien on April 7th for County Board of Supervisors. Read more about Joe at: https://www.josephobrienforwaukeshacountyboard.com/

New Berlin Taxpayers Alliance Endorses Matthew Arend for School Board

The New Berlin Taxpayers Alliance has endorsed Matthew Arend for the New Berlin School Board election on April 7th 2026.

Too often in school board campaigns “Taxpayers” are ignored when it comes to public education. NBTA was quick to notice Matthew Arend views taxpayers as a co-equal stakeholder in School District business. With or without kids in the schools, the Taxpayers pay for school facilities and staff.

In discussions with Matt he shared his view that Students, Parents, and Taxpayers are the primary driver of School District policy and they would be the focus of his time of service on the School Board.

Matthew is also a CPA with extensive experience in finance, budgeting, and process improvements. This is the kind of fiscal leadership New Berlin Schools will benefit from and is worthy of our endorsement.

For more information on Matthew Arend please visit: www.nbfreedom.org

For additional information on the school board candidates read below:

In addition to his strong qualifications for sound fiscal management Matthew Arend was also willing to stand for common sense on ‘social’ issues that may likely come before the school board in the near future.

Across the country and here in the Midwest, the disturbing trend of biological boys, identified as “transgender”, being allowed to use girls bathrooms/locker rooms and competing in girls sports is becoming more common. This infringes on the rights of all female students to have privacy and safety. For female student athletes, at a minimum this takes away opportunities and the ‘equal playing field’ in girls sports. In some cases it even puts the safety of our girls in jeopardy, as evidenced by multiple news reports of female athletes being seriously injured by males competing against them on other teams.

We posed this question to Mr. Arend and he replied: “Boys should not be playing on girls sports teams or in girls bathrooms/locker rooms, and I will do everything in my power as member of the school board to prevent this from occurring.

What a refreshingly common sense position to take!

Voters should be aware NBTA posed the same question to the democrat-favored candidate Amanda Peterson who is also running for school board. We asked Ms. Peterson her position on biological males in female sports/bathrooms on her Facebook page and she hid the question from view. We emailed Ms. Peterson to give her a second chance to respond for this article and she again declined to respond.

The Waukesha County Democrats have endorsed Amanda Peterson on their website. https://www.waukeshadems.org/vote

The Democrat platform has consistently put the preferences of biological male ‘transgender students’ above the rights of all female students. NBTA doesn’t believe this is right for New Berlin and is another reason we don’t believe Amanda Peterson is right for our School Board.

The Spring Election is on Tuesday April 7th. For more voter information including other races on your ballot and your voting location please visit: https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/My-Voter-Info

New Berlin Taxpayers Alliance Endorses Scott La Fever for District 2 Alderman

The New Berlin Taxpayers Alliance has endorsed incumbent Scott La Fever for District 2 Alderman.

2025/26 has presented a revelation in New Berlin. After Mayor Dave Ament was re-elected, running unopposed in the Spring of 2025, New Berlin’s financial troubles have surfaced.

Under the leadership of Mayor Ament, New Berlin spent over $22 Million dollars on a massive new Rec Center which opened in 2024 (The “Pickleball-Mahal”) in the former Wal-Mart building on National Avenue. Eyebrows began to raise when shortly after taxpayers noticed the vacant Hickory Grove School being renovated for $6 Million dollars for an additional community center which opened in 2025.

In July of 2025 New Berlin’s financial troubles were revealed when the city explored levying a “Wheel Tax” on taxpayers to pay for all the over-spending.

New Berlin is also considering going to referendum asking the taxpayers to allow the city to increase taxes higher than the rate currently allowed under state law in order to cover New Berlin’s budget shortfall. They are calling this a ‘public safety’ referendum, but make no mistake about it. The city diverted funds to ‘amenities’ and excess spending that could have been used for public safety thinking they can scare taxpayers into voting yes on a referendum ‘sold’ under that premise. Note: The city didn’t go to referendum to ask you if you wanted your taxes raised to build 2 massive recreation/community centers.

In December New Berlin taxpayers received property tax bills with steep increases from the prior year.

Also in December The New Berlin Planning Commission approved a large Milwaukee Rescue Mission drug rehab facility for homeless men and a related “Land Division” (combining parcels) to make the development possible.

Scott La Fever was against the Recreation Center project (its the reason he decided to run for City Council) and voted against the Hickory Grove project while on the city council.

Alderman La Fever voted against the ‘land division’ proposal the Milwaukee Rescue Mission homeless male drug rehab facility needed to combine properties for their large development.

Alderman La Fever has been an advocate for fiscal responsibility and reduced city government spending.

Who is Meg Gardner?

Meg Gardner is a member of the New Berlin Planning Commission. She was appointed by Mayor Dave Ament.

Meg Gardner voted FOR the Milwaukee Rescue Mission Drug Rehab facility while on the planning commission.

It’s clear to NBTA Meg Gardner is running against Scott La Fever because Alderman La Fever has not been a rubber stamp for Mayor Ament’s massive spending spree. It’s our opinion based on observation and conversation with other city officials Mayor Ament wants a “yes woman” to replace Scott La Fever on the City Council because La Fever often votes against Ament’s excessive spending.

NBTA believes the 2nd District City Council Member should represent the taxpayers of the 2nd District, NOT be a puppet taking orders from Mayor Ament. For this reason + his proven track record of fiscal responsibility, and his opposition to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission “land division” proposal, The New Berlin Taxpayers Alliance endorses Scott La Fever for 2nd District Alderman in the Tuesday April 7th Spring Election.

If you are in the 2nd District please consider re-electing Scott La Fever. We need his independent voice on the City Council. If you know anyone in the 2nd District please share this article with them.

The Destination Baseball Complex the New Berlin Planning Commission Rejected Moves Forward in Big Bend

Over the summer the New Berlin Planning Commission, who are all appointed by Mayor Dave Ament, rejected a $170 Million dollar privately funded destination youth tournament baseball complex. This complex would have been built off Grange Avenue just east of Costco/South Side of Grange and drawn thousands of families from across the country to the area every week. Those families would have patronized local businesses including restaurants, hotels, and The Ridge movie theater.

Members of the New Berlin Planning Commission told the developer the plan would not get approved. When the developer pushed for ‘next steps’ the city attorney sent a letter to the developer indicating the project was ‘not in the best interest of the city’. The New Berlin Taxpayers Alliance has a copy of this letter.

This development would have been a massive economic boon for New Berlin at a time when the City of New Berlin is crying for property tax increases. A wheel tax was explored and rejected. The city is now planning to have a referendum to allow the city to raise property taxes above the Act 10 taxpayer protections in state law.

The sports complex the City of New Berlin rejected has now been unveiled in Big Bend.

See article: https://www.gmtoday.com/the_freeman/news/youth-sports-complex-eyed-for-big-bend/article_8a6a5f6e-6c2e-50d6-a16e-77a9f79e1f98.html?

Television news report: https://www.tmj4.com/news/waukesha-county/big-bend-residents-split-on-proposed-massive-youth-sports-complex-plan

Are the New Berlin Mayor and Planning Commission acting in the best interest of the taxpayers of New Berlin? Instead of a massive economic game-changing development that would bring massive amounts of new tax revenue and profit for local businesses into the city, New Berlin approves a drug rehab facility for homeless men from Milwaukee? (see prior article on this website)

New Berlin Planning Commission Rejects a $170 Million Dollar National Destination Youth Tournament Baseball Complex but Approves Massive Homeless “Rehabilitation” Facility for Milwaukee Rescue Mission

Over the summer the New Berlin Planning Commission, who are all appointed by Mayor Dave Ament, rejected a $170 Million dollar privately funded destination youth tournament baseball complex. This complex would have been built off Grange Avenue just east of Costco and drawn thousands of families from across the country to the area every week.

On December 8th the New Berlin planning commission APPROVED a massive “men’s only” “rehabilitation” facility for the Milwaukee Rescue Mission https://milmission.org/ which provides services to homeless and troubled individuals. This proposed facility would provide services to men only.

https://www.newberlinwi.gov/2504/Milwaukee-Rescue-Mission—New-Journey

Critics of the development point to statistics showing 3/4’s of homeless individuals have severe mental health issues including alcohol/drug addition, schizophrenia, and major depression and ask why these people are being imported from Milwaukee to New Berlin where they have no ties to the community? https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8423293/

A supporter of the development expressed a sentiment that:
“the work they do there getting people clean and productive is exactly what New Berlin wants. Do you want people contributing to society or not? There has to be work done to get them from addict to productive citizen”

Is the New Berlin Planning Commission acting in the best interest of the RESIDENTS of the city? What would residents have preferred, a showcase destination youth sports complex, or a homeless rehabilitation facility?

Information from the city (see previous link) indicates action will be taken on a meeting on January 13th, 2026 but it is unclear if residents will have a chance to participate in the discussion. You are encouraged to reach out to the mayor and your alderman to express your thoughts on this development and get more information on the upcoming meeting time/agenda

After Multi-Year Building Bonanza, New Berlin Proposes Wheel Tax on Residents

On July 22nd the Ralph Chipman, Director of Finance for the City of New Berlin asked the Common Council to grant him permission to contact the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation and begin the process of implementing a Wheel Tax in New Berlin. This NEW tax would be up to $40 per vehicle.

See the proposal at the following link:
https://newberlinwi.portal.civicclerk.com/event/1602/files/attachment/5619

Chipman indicated New Berlin faces a significant budget gap for the upcoming year in excess of $3.7 Million.

This proposal has left many New Berlin residents questioning why New Berlin has been on a multi-year building bonanza if the City was facing future budget shortfalls?

New Berlin spent between $18 Million and $22.2 Million converting the former Wal-Mart into an Activity and Recreation Center which opened in 2024. Only a fraction of New Berlin residents have ever used the Rec Center. Usage has been so low that the expanded hours that were supposed to be implemented in 2024 never came to be.

In spite of an under utilized recreation center, elected New Berlin officials decided to spend another $6 Million dollars renovating the old Hickory Grove school on Sunnyslope and Cleveland into an additional community center. This work is ongoing at the time of this post.

(UPDATED!) New Berlin West High School Moves “Official” Prom Photo Venue to High Crime Location Near Downtown Milwaukee

On Wednesday April 18th New Berlin West announced the “official” school sanctioned location for Prom photos had been changed from Boerner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corners to the Milwaukee Public Library – Central Library on West Wisconsin Ave. in Downtown Milwaukee. This change was reported as a result of “rainy weather” in spite of the forecast for this Friday (Prom date) being 60 and sunny for New Berlin.

This comes less than a week since a ‘shootout’ occurred on West Wisconsin Avenue a few blocks from the MKE library that caught innocent bystanders, leaving a concert at Am Fam Field in a bus-limo, in the crossfire.

A recent roundtable of CEO’s of notable downtown employers like Northwestern Mutual and Milwaukee Electric Tool, included statements from executives indicating many employees had been assaulted/robbed during the day coming to and from their offices. Milwaukee Electric Tool is 3 blocks from the central library.

Recent news reports from Milwaukee are chock full of stories of reckless driving, car theft, and assaults all across the city.

Parents have expressed concern to school officials but been told by the faculty advisor it was a “student decision” leaving parents to wonder “was there an adult in the room?”.

The Central Library has no parking. Teenagers from NB West in high heels and dresses will be parking on side streets blocks away and walking distances to get to the library.

One parent was quoted as saying “In the past year New Berlin chose to close schools, for student safety, on the FORECAST of bad weather (which never materialized), yet they are going to send our kids to a high crime location in a different county for Prom photos?”

Parents who wish to express their concerns may contact school officials:

District Superintendent Joe Garza: Joe.Garza@nbexcellence.org
NBW Principal Michael Fesenmaier: Michael.Fesenmaier@nbexcellence.org

UPDATE: This afternoon (Wednesday April 19th) New Berlin West issued a statement claiming the following:

Please know pre-prom photos are not part of the school’s prom planning with students, nor is it something the school sponsors or endorses. The location for photos is, and always has been, completely student-driven. Staff nor administration are part of the planning for this aspect of this pre-prom event; the school coordinates the venue, DJ, food and refreshments, and the dance itself.

This is simply not accurate. The notice of pre-prom photos was posted on the New Berlin West SALU Instagram page. SALU is the school sanctioned student government at New Berlin West. It is administered under the direction of the Athletic Director. See the following link on the school website:

https://nbwvikings.net/teams/3450690/salu-student-government/high-school

To suggest the school does not sanction or endorse the actions of the student government organization the school itself sanctions is a misrepresentation of truth and insult to the intelligence of parents in the district.
